Fouling occurs in cooling water systems when solid materials leave deposits on equipment surfaces. Deposits are introduced into the system from airborne materials and make–up water. These solids are the result of clay oils, debris, microbes, mud, organic matter, and sand. Fouling greatly reduces the efficiency of heat transfer and water flow in water cooling systems.
